The Empathy Project is a project of Protecting Animals, USA (PA-USA), a nonprofit 501(c)3 animal-advocacy group headquartered in Chicago, IL. We offer a series of free and low-cost, captivating educational presentations that focus on inspiring empathy and provide resources on animal, environmental, and cultural issues for grades six through college and adult audiences in Chicagoland and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Our interactive programs encourage participation and critical thinking by combining lively discussions with videos and activities. Programs are flexible in length, and offered on a sliding scale, to meet the interests of the venue.

Our Instructors :
Danielle Marino has a Bachelor's of Science in Psychology from the University of Illinois at Champaign and training from the International Institute for Humane Education . She believes humane education is a vital way to create a compassionate world.

Sandy DeLisle has her Master's of Education from Northern Illinois University and has two sons to whom she is a full-time humane educator. She taught middle school science and language arts in two Illinois public school systems (Waukegan and Deerfield). Additionally, Sandy served as science program developer and presenter at ComEd's Power House Museum in Zion, IL as well as Outdoor Education facilitator at Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, IL.

Nora Kramer has taught classes about animals and the environment at several public elementary and middle schools in San Francisco. Nora addresses a variety of humane issues in a fun, interactive, and nonjudgmental way. Nora also gives classroom presentations at high schools and advises student animal and environmental protection clubs in the Bay Area. Nora has a BA in English and Psychology from the State University of New York (SUNY)-Binghamton.

Why a Butterfly? EP's butterfly is a metaphor for the transformative power of humane education. Our programs are designed to provide a new perspective on our world and each other- one of interconnectedness and compassion. We see this transformation take place with students even after one presentation and teachers continue to invite us back!

Your class has inspired students to take action. One proudly announced, "I have been recycling for 2 weeks!" The impact of environmental programs like yours are essential to preserving and protecting our communities.

The instructor was very enthusiastic and made great use of visuals and hands-on materials. She gave students something to think about.

I liked most how the instructor encouraged student participation and related empathy towards both animals and humans.
